Down to the Town Art Workshop

Wild About Wight’s exciting new arts project in association with Quay Arts, got off to a colourful start today at Sandown Library in The Bay!

Dozens of people joined Isle of Wight artists Hannah George, Babs Gowan, Caroline Underwood and Ian Whitmore, as well as the communities team from Vectis Housing, exploring East Wight’s surroundings, both natural and architectural - through a whole range of art processes.

Print-making, clay impressions, collage and drawing were literally on the cards! Everyone’s mini postcard artworks are being collected into specially-made envelopes to create ‘alternative souvenirs’ celebrating what makes the East Wight unique. Rare plant and invertebrate species, our marine life and landscapes, even our dinosaurs all featured in print and collage. Meanwhile participants headed out into town to collect clay impressions of street architecture and create laminates of pressed leaves & wildflowers, helping to create a snapshot of Sandown here and now!

The artists will be running 12 more Wild About Wight workshops in various locations around the East Wight from now until March 2019 when the project will culminate in a fantastic art exhibition at Quay Arts, Newport, timed to coincide with the International Year of the Biosphere. The amazing East Wight ‘souvenirs’, ceramic installations and more will be on show!

If you’d like to join us, keep an eye out for details of future workshops on the Vectis Housing website, the Quay Arts website, Facebook pages: Natural Wight & Vectis Housing Association and follow us on Instagram wild_about_wight.
